Slashed!

Slashing bread is done to control the shape of theloaf while it is being baked in the oven. Gas expands inside the dough as it is being baked and if there are no slashes for excess gas to escape, the loaf may have "burts" that may render an ill-shaped loaf. These slashes should be made by a lame...it's like a blade mounted on a handle. I haven't found a lame yet (nonefound in cooks exchange, none in chocolate lovers, none in gourdo's and none in heny sison's!!!!), so for my first few batches of sourdough, I used a very sharp knife, then turned to use a razor blade.

The closest thing to a lame that I can think of is a scalpel! Sharp blade on a handle=scaplel right?
now a baker's tool--very sharp indeed!!!

It's easier to work with and makes more precise slashes...check it out...

I think they look prettier now, don't you think? =)

Italian Bread Sticks: Grissinis

My shobe is quite a finicky eater. She is the kind of person who needs to get in the mood for food!

It was been while that she has been requesting Grissinis. I really wanted to make her a batch as soon as she thought about them, but I wasn't able to get my hands on some semolina flour. Well, a recent cheese trip to Santi's led me to a bag of semolina flour and I was more than happy to get to bread stick baking for her =)

That night, was sourdough making night again. Yes siree, I make bread regularly..to keep my starter alive and to supply the house hold with fresh bread. I usually make bread late in the evening, and while waiting for the dough to rise before shaping the loaves, I started on my Grissini =)

These breadsticks, I made with semolina flour and all purpose flour. I used good olive oil too but didn't add Rosemary, beacuse my shobe is not fond of herbage!

The dough is risen flattened out

Well, hand made Grissinis tend to be thicker and twisted or oddly shaped...hence they look this way =)

They turned our pretty good! After pulling the first batch from the oven, I called on to my shobe! It was to be her late night snack! hehehehe They cool quite fast so they were consumable in a few minutes after baking.

here they are, cooling on the rack...

She liked them and ate them with Philadelphia Chive and Onion cream cheese! I tried them with nutella....it reminded me of Yan-yan! hahahah

They should be kept in air tight containers to keep them crisp! As you can see, my air-tight container is a bit short...so I just repacked them in plastic sugar bags and sealed them using an impulse-sealer =)

ONE YEAR TODAY!!!!

HAPPY FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO MY BLOG!!! =)

How time flies...its now a year since I started blabbering here and its great!!! To the people who read this ...thank you!

Road Trip Part V: Where is Everybody???!!!

I remember at the Pink Kitchen, a lot of people were raving about Everybody's Cafe food there. I really wanted to try the Frogs and Cricket dish, but didn't have the chance to do so.

Well the final destination of our road trip was to find EVERYBODY! Where the heck is EVERYBODY?... was the question since we left Manila. We meant for it to be the first resto we try at Pampanga..but we didn't find it then.

So even with very full stomachs from our pit stop at Razon's, we still searched for this elusive resto! Half of our team gave up! Yes, the Binondo Badminton Squad with Matt & Sher went home ahead....so it was just us...THE TRIPOD and War & Din.

EUREKA!!!!!!!

Yes! Yes! Everybody is here at last! hahaha Unfortunately, when we looked at the display counter of food (ala canteen style) ....we were still full pa talaga--so alas...no appeal! SAYANG! But, satiety shall not lead us to defeat! We forged through and ORDERED! hahahahaha We just picked out the food that we really, really want to try...

No this is NOT the house tea..this is the house soup! for FREE =)

It tastes like the water inside the Balut!

Crickets!!!!
This is what we came for! It's called the CAMARO!--like bumble bee in Transformers! hahaha It tastes like....hmmm crispy and cooked like it was marinated in a bistek tagalog sauce and then pan fried =)

This is the Dinuguan!
Their version is not the usual muddy looking dinuguan. The blood here is coagulated in small blocks..so they are uniform in size along with the other innards =) I like muddy dinuguan better, though I am not a fan of this dish!

Another dish that we came here for, other than the Camaro...THE FROG!!!
It's stuffed with ground pork...redolent of a Relleno actually The whole thing is then deep fried! It tastes like fried stuffed squab! It's really good =)

An army of beheaded stuufed frogs ready for the fryer!

It's worth the trip because it was really fun trying exotic food. I hope they DON'T put up a branch in Manila because, I think the fun in dining in this place is the NOVELTY of the eating experience. We enjoyed eating here, most definitely, but I don't think its the kind of place I'd want to eat at regularly....maybe once a year lang ;P
What a food adventure this road trip turned out to be!
Thank you Oli, Ven, Matt & Sher, War & Din and the Binondo Badminton Squad (especially to Peachy!)It was a blast!!!! Let's do this again ah!!! =)

Road Trip IV: LA CORAZON OF RAZON!

Oli and I vowed to have the ORIGNAL Guagua Halo-halo of Razon's! So at the last leg of our road trip....to Razon we all go!!!

Hmmm.... there were a LOT of ORIGINAL Razon's here pala! hahaha It's like the Collette's buko pie in Tagaytay...every store claims to be THE ORIGINAL branch! hahahaha

Well, we decided on this one, near a Total gas station....
By then, we were all famished! The extreme breakfast we had, have already been fully digested (and some reserved in our hips, thighs and buttocks! ;phehehehheeh)

We eagerly scanned the menu...
... it seems like items here are cheaper...halo-halo at Php45.00...if I am not mistaken, its around Php60-70 here in Manila.

We had the Chicharon...

...it's not the airy type, its the more solid with "laman" kind...crunchy and great with vinegar!

Ven ordered the PUTO
It was dense and dry..but we finished it all because we were starving! hahaha

The Tripod...shared a Palabok

Others had this too. There was a sign there which says: Our Palabok is Timplado na..please taste before putting PATIS! heheheh Well, something to that effect! So we followed what the sign said, but we thought it did need a dash of fish sauce =) I am no fan of Palaboks, but I think this was just so, so.

And..the main event...the Guagua Halo-halo

So, is it any different from its Manila rendition?---Nah! It's the same. Taste great and still has lovely fine ice, that makes it so cool and refreshing. I just noticed the macapuno strips are in strips here and more generously put as that of in Manila. Oh and the leche flan too is more gereously placed atop of this yummy treat!!!

Road Trip Part III: ZOOBIC

After our uber great breakfast, we went duty free shopping once again and then headed for a little forest adventure at ZOOBIC!

It seemed like a great idea...you ride in this caged jeepney and go through the jungle like road to see the animals.
Moi, Din, War and Ven

The trip is 3 hours long pala! We were pressed for time because we got there around 1pm and check out time is 2pm! So, we just had picture taking at the entrance!hehehe Good for me because there was a part of thr trail..the Savannah---where there are birds!!!!--EEEEEppppsssss!!!! Thanks, but no thanks! ...Whew! Close call for me! hahahaha

Nonetheless, we managed to see a little bit of teh "wild life". At Zoobic...you have to slow down while driving because, as the sign says,...there are MONKEYS CROSSING!!!

lookie here

Oli..is dat you??????:P Uh-huh....yeah...baaar-ten-dur! hahaha Kaya wala ka sa pic above...may solo ka pala dito! ;P harharhar!!!!!

Road Trip Part II: EXTREME BREAKFAST

We all woke up famished! Some of the BBS girls had the breakfast buffet at the hotel...but no, no, no, no way for me! I told the boys---we have breakfast at XTREMELY XPRESSO!!!!

This is my favorite coffee shop in subic! The first time I got to try this place was last holy week...and I loved it! Good coffee and great meals! The breakfast selection is the best and they also offer pastas and extra large pizzas!!!! May I add, at a very affordable price with free wifi to boot!!! What more can you ask for in a coffee shop??? Ako wala na =)

Here is my morning brew!!! Bold and no sour after taste..just the way I like it =)

the coffee bar....

I had the plain waffles. I love waffles with lots of butter (real butter ah!) and a tad bit of maple syrup. That thing oozing at the side is the orange marmalade they serve it with. I am no fan of orange marmalades, soweee ;P
This is the Bluberry Waffles...or as Peachy calls them...Burberry Waffles! hahahaha

Oli's Good Morning Plate!
A foot long hotdog, two eggs (sunny side up, over easy), slices of ham and bacon, served with toasts and wedges of oranges....and boy did Oli's eyes pop open seeing this plate served to him!!!---GOOD MORNING OLI!!!!!! =D

Matt and Din had the ALL FILIPINO BREAKFAST PLATE

Oh boy---it is ALL FILIPINO ALL RIGHT! Tocino, Longanisa, Tapa and fried egg with Garlic sinangag and atchara on the side! YES---ni-lahat nila ang Filipino breakfast favorites!!! True to its name! How could this plate not bring up a smile on anyone's face???

Most of us were in the mood for breakfast fare, even if it was already almost 11am!!! But Ven...my dear Ven wanted the lunch entrees...here is his Fish and & Chips
Well, it's actually Fish and Fries served with honey mustard sauce. The fish is battered like that of for chicken strips and the fries and thick and crisp criss-cut ones.

Sher had the Bluberry cheesecake
It's good..the baked kind with blueberry marbling inside as an added bonus =)
Well, we were all very, very happy with our meals!hehehe Happy meals render happy travellers! We then set out for another duty free shopping spree and maybe some adventure! hehehehe

Road Trip Part I: Aresi Found!!!!

Since it was a long weekend, Oli, Ven, War, Din Matt, Sher, myself...along with the Bindondo Badminton Squad, went on a road trip to Subic, Pampanga!---YEHEY!!!! =D Raining as it did, our spirits were unscathed! We were on for some fun and food adventure!!!

Our first stop.....

Aresi used to be one of my favorite, if not my number one, favorite hang outs in Morato area. It was situated just across Gerry's grill in Tomas Morato and ABS-CBN. Now Guilly's Island has taken over it's spot. Sayang! I don't know why it closed down. The food there is good and priced just right, and as I remeber, cocktails there are cheap too.

Well, I finally found myself back in Aresi!!! Yes, it still stands...but all the way in Subic Water Front pa! Ahhh, the lengths we go for food!!! hahaha

This was just our "meryenda", so we just oredered a variety of pizzas...

The Margherita Pizza

YUMMMMMY!!!!!! I love it! The crust is great! Crisp and cooked perfectly! It's cheesey and tomato-basilly good! hahaha ;P

The Seafood Pizza

Yummy too!!! It's not too loaded with seafood...heck...I don't even recall finding any seafood! hahaha I think there were shripms etc...but the crust was great...it was cheesy and the toppings were there (basta)...so it was still good =)

The Aresi Special

It's loaded with Italian saugages, peperoni, basil, tomatoes, musjrooms, other sausages...the works! A meat lovers delight!

As you can see here, Oli is DELIGHTED! hahahahah
The pizzas were all good!!! I love the Margherita best! =) I checked out the bar list...from the BAAAR-TEN-DUR....hahha...and saw that they are still cheap! ;P

Oh, and pizzas re cheap too...280-305 lang! Not bad at all!
Here we are...2 of the BBS Members (Nikki & Peachy), Moi & Oli
....happily waiting for our food =)

Great food and great ambiance!

Breakfast @ Conti's

I asked Sal if we could go back and have breakfast at Conti's---for old times sake! hehehe We used to have breakfast there often because we liked going to the Greenhills Sunday market, which is just close to where it is at in Connecticut. It was a string of Sundays that we went there for breakfast, after which we rush to the Sunday Market to buy fresh seafood (like lobsters, crabs, soft shell crabs, tiger prawns, fish etc..) to bring home so that our families may enjoy seafood for lunch! It's great to buy there because I find that the sellers are honest and fair with the prices they bestow. There are also vegetables, fruits and puto! There is a seller there selling puto bigas, which is really good!!! =)

Well, no palengke time today, because after lunch I leave for a road trip to Pangpanga!!!-Yahooo!!!

But, but, I make time for my dear Sally =)

We had pancakes

the pancakes were like from McDo..that's why we like them =) hehehehe I think they came from a box ;P
and the Arroz ala Cubana
...I like bananas and raisins in savory food! This was ok but isn't the authentic Cuban version of this has no tomato sauce? ---I'm not sure. It was alright. It had ground pork with raisins in tomato sauce, sevred with some pieces of bacon (one lang ata yun), fried banana slices and an egg on garlic rice.

It was a heavy breakfast. We ad time to go around the Tiangge, which has just opened and then off to Unimart for a lottle grocery shopping =)

A morning perfectly spent!

Dinner @ Shawie's

It's been a while since I've ben with my good friend's Mike and Shawie. Last time was Shawie's wedding pa!

It was great that we got a chance to have dinner at the newly weds abode. They have a beautiful home and we had a great evening of catchung up and eating!!! We picked out photos from their wedding...we had to reduce 2000 to 200!!! That is quite time consuming, I tell you! Nevertheless, it was great looking at the pics and marveling at how time flies talaga.

Mike & I brought Almond Sans Rival from Conti's and my bread ofcourse =)

This was very good!!! =)
Thank you Alvin & Shawi for dinner and entertaining us at your lovely home! Thank you Mikey for another great shopping-capade...hope you recover fully na para more strength to shop!hahahhaa

The Other Sumo

I've eaten at SumoSam lots and lots of times, but last night was my first time to dine at their Power Plant branch. Yup, I think it opened a few months back. It's on the expansion wing just above where Beaty Bar, Lush and Tyler shops are. Oli, Ven, Chie and I were suppose to have dinner at Serendra, but alas..it was drizzling and traffic was awful on southbound EDSA. So we decided to chill at Power Plant mall. Ven felt like having some Japanese...as for the rest of us....man, we just wanted to get food---and fast because we were starving, especially Chie ;P hehehehe. Oli thought of Sumosam...decent Japanese food and fast! hahaha It was a real good thing the place was not packed for dinner, unlike in the Shang branch where its always teeming with customers and the wait, wait ,wait part is enevitable.

Ven chose the Ebi Tempura Maki
..kinda like the one I had at Nanohana...a tempura stuck in the middle of a maki
The Seared Tuna Salad
Slices of pan seared sesame seed crusted Tuna beside a salad =)

I was bit taken back at the site of Ven eating the greens!!! Ven!!! what happened to you my carnivorous friend????---Did hunger make you eat your much dreaded veggies??? =)hahaha

The Spicy Tuna Roll

The Crispy Maki...
...that was not ours!hahaha The waitress took this one back =)

Oli and Chie were very famished ang opted for the set dinner which comprised of:

a bowl of Miso Soup

A side salad

California Maki
and 2 Mains: either Chicken or Beef and Salmon or Ebi
the Chicken-Salmon
Beef-Ebi

both served with Japanese fried rice! A great deal for around 400-ish a set

for moi, The Chicken Teriyaki Rice Plate

We were all happy with our food, no complaints, except for Chie's Bef-Ebi other which came really late! Apart from that, I think the service here is better than in Shang mall.

Penicillium Roqueforti

Taking up Food Technology, was really fun and exciting---err...in it's own special way =). We basically specialze on the science or food and processing..in other word the technical aspect(sort of what Alton Brown does on a deeper level)..not the fun cooking, plating, table setting, bartending and function preparations that Hotel and Restaurant Ad majors do. Nagkamali ba ako ng course noon? hahahaha ;P

Why do I get into this now, you might say...well, yesterday I was craving for blue cheese, so I dropped buy the friendly neighborhood Santi's deli to get me some for lunch and a bag of semolina flour as well (for my grissini project) ....

....yummy! Staring at this mold ladened wedge of glory, reminded be of our food microbio class. It was the firs time I met the Roquefort cheese! I think most of us then haven't tasted this type of cheese before, and in fact had not even dared to eat it! I recall that experiment so well, where we had to isolate the Penicillium Roqueforti (the fungus that is responsible for that pungent aroma and disctinctive taste). Our professor had us buy them blue cheeses and EAT them before we used them for plating! I was willing...most were mortified by the thought of putting it in their mouth!hahaha We had crackers to go with it----I tasted it---yuck?--oh no--wait---wow! An ardent sensory mishmash=). Since then my love for cheese began =) Late, but never too late, to realize the world of cheeses there is out there pala.

A bit of nostalgia from a funky smellin' cheese! See how food makes memories come back? hahaha I love it!

Que voudriez-vous?

Last night, my shobe was not in the mood. Coming home, tired from school gets her weary and picky with food. To cheer her up, I asked her what she felt like eating for dinner..Mcdo? --nah...KFC?--nah...or ditsie can cook something for you..pasta? salad? toast?--she finally smiled at the thought and said yes.

I used to prepare her lunch baon when she was in highschool. Since I do wake up rather early, I make "imbento" recipes for her..she likes her food interesting and nouveau! hehehe

I made 3 cheese tomato-olive pasta. Yun kase nahanap ko sa pantry and ref !hehehe I sauteed garlic in olive oil, put basil, a little oregano, rosemary, sliced olives, diced fresh tomatoes and added parmesan, ementhal and chevital cheese! bwahahaha (cheese din naman yun!)

... to add a little interest to it, I simmered the sauce with some pinapple juice do add a little sweetness and zing. I seasoned it well with salt and pepper and served it to my shobe..along with...

...Caesar salad and garlic toast (sourdough, sympre!)

..for the salad, i just tore some iceberg lettuce and drizzled Toscana Caesar salad dressing (which I got from Santi's) and sprinkled Hormel Premium REAL -crumbled BACON BITS!

Yes! No need to fry thy bacon to a burnt crisp! Just get a handfull from the bag and shower on whatever. Super convenient and good ah! It says on the label--- 30% LESS FAT than pan fried bacon! hehehehe Healthy pa? ;P This was from the stash of goodies my dad brought home from his recent US trip.

Well, my shobe found the pineapple twist kinda odd--she doesn't like pineapple =( I forgot! but she ate it anyway, but was not that enthused. That made me sad talaga...buti nalang my other sis Che liked it...she had it for breakfast this morning and finished off what was left from last night! YEY =)

A clean plate is the best compliment a cook can have!

Next time I promised shobe...NO pineapple with her food! =) Sorry baby!

The Night I Met Casanova

I frequently hang out at Corinthian Hills and always seem to find myself at UCC or Starbucks...skipping this lone Italian resto there that has been calling on to me, time in time...well last night I finally met Casanova! hahaha Well, Le Gran Caffe Casanova that is! =)
Yes, we favor the Italian flavor! Cha, Carol, Mark and I had dinner there last night...all our first time ;P hehehe
The place a bit small but has a big al fresco area. The place is quite charming, especially at night =)
We were served complimentary slices of baguettes with a dipping of olive oil, balsamic and parmesan cheese. I am being very critical on bread baskets lately....the bread was dry...on the verge of being stale =( ....sad, I liked the dip pa naman.

We had the Margherita Pizza

....simple tomato, basil and mozzarella toppings on an equisitely crisp crust. I love it! =) The crust was thin and crisp and delicious.

..so I took another shot! hehehehe

have a slice.....=)

Mark, being the typical guy, had this beef entree...again...I forgot the name ;P

...it's like roast beef with a mushroom-gravy like sauce, served with roasted marble potatoes and beans. It was a tad bit too salty and the beef not so tender...

The Casanova Pesto Penne Pasta

It's creamy pesto on penne pasta. It's good and rich tasting. The penne is al dente =)

To cap our meal, I had to have my caffe Americano and Cha had this cafe latte..

...kinda reminded me of the cafe lattes of dome cafe =)

They offer the usual Italian dolci...zuppa ingles, gelatos (Angelati!!! ) and....

The Tiramisu

...it's the frozen kind...which I liked =) very nice minus the whipped cream adornment.
Dinner was great! We had fun catching up and enjoying good Italian food amidst the cool breezy evening.
It was nice hanging with you guys! Thank you Mark for dinner and dolci=)
My evening did not end there, my good friend Mark ordered my Chocobons--yey! ...I was just so happy to make them again...so when I got home I baked 'till the wee hours of the morn!hehehe Thanks again Mark! =)

Kopi Break

We had a little Kopi break at NP Kopi Tiam. I have tried the food there once, but never really had KOPI ;P I had the Hot House Kopi....and I was a bit surprised when they served it to me....TIMPLADO na! ;P hahaha It's already mixed with cream and sugar.
NP Kopi Tiam also offer breads and pastries..kinda like the breads of bread talk. A coffee shop cum bake shop cum chinese/korean resto =)

Dinner at Cantinetta

I've passed and passed Cantinetta at Rockwell many, many times and have intended to dine there time in time..but never did so.

Well, the time has come, and I was glad that the gang chose this place to have dinner. Oli and I hanged a bit at Starbucks before meeting the gang at Powerplant mall.

Having dinner with a big group is really great...for one..love the company and two you get to try numerous dishes! ahahaha

We were served bread baskets (which were just slices of french bread) with a duo of liver pate and tomato salsa-ish spread.

Their bread was ok...but we wanted more because we were hungry!!! hahaha So we asked for more bread please....but to our disappointment they DECLINED our request! We were told by the waitress that they only give one round of free bread and the next basket shall be charged na!!!We all went...grabe naman bread lang ah....and Oli goes "Jen, labas ko na ba yun bread na bigay mo?" hahahahha I told him "baka may corckage pa..wag na!"hahhaah Oli was egging me to offer my bread to the Italian owner...who was there that night. Na-chicken ako and perhaps next time I might =) hehhehehe

Good thing the pizzas started to come in, otherwise, we would start to get annoyed by the bread-selfishness of the resto! hahahaha

This is the Prosciutto Pizza

Yummmmmmmmmmmy!!!! The crust was the chewy kind with crisp edges. The tomato sauce was so good..it was very flavorful, tangy yet had a sweetish note....a great base for the delicately sliced prociutto and mozzarella topping.

The Genovese Pizza

I recall ordering this same pizza variety at Bellissimo...and this was the proper version of it! The pesto was very flavorful and was accompanied by 2 kinds of formaggio, pecorino romano and was it mozzarella? I don't remeber exactly because we had several pizzas AND...AND... while I was trying to copy the names of the food that we ordered, from the menu...because I DID want to post it properly....the waitress approached me and told me that they don't allow that. I felt like a student being reprimanded by a teacher! Was my act unethical or were they being unethical to me? --Well, the good food kept me and my friends in a good mood and we found ourselves laughing at that incident....ahahhaha I didn't really mind because its just all in the name of fun =)

This is the Pizza Deliziozo
This is just like the prociutto pizza, only this had arichokes, black olives and parma ham

This is the Gemberetti ala Legis

It's a very rich pasta dish. Full of flavor, with shrimps and zucchini in a creamy mascarpone sauce!!! Ohhh lalala!!! I think, it's great to have it in minute helpings because mejo nakaka-suya if you eat a lot of it. Good thing there was 11 of us sharing each dish =)

The Pesto Mare

As the name implies, its pesto pasta with seafood (shrimps, clams and squid). Another full flavored dish! Their pesto is really good =)

Ravioli ai Funghi

Ravioli pasta filled with Porchini mushrooms with a cream sauce. Rich! Rich! Rich! As Steph puts its.."makalaglag-p_ _t_" hahahhaha Yeah, it was really good and flavorful..but again...good in small helpings =)

This is Ven-tot's four seasons fruit shake

Ofcourse I had a taste of it---buti sweet si Ven ;P hahhahaha. Refreshing and fruity =) I detect bananas.

Oli's Grape shake

Kelangan talaga pa-taste test sakin lahat ;P...it ws grapey all right..a bit too sweet for me =)

It was a night of happy palates! We were all happy with all the food we ordered. Kudos to Cantinetta!
No room for dessert though...but they have tiramisu, zabaglione, chocolate cake and superb gelato--Angelati Italia no less! =)
I checked out the cafe menu...illy of course! They say there..."Italians love coffee...anytime is a great time for cafes!" or something to that effect...well...I think I am Italian then =)
The prices are pretty steep for the entrees (around Php 800++, depending on the dish) and pasta (around Php 400++ per plate) but for the pizza, its not so bad..around Php380-410 for an 8 slice round.
Very good Italian food..worth it and worth goin back to.
Good food and fun with good friends. Thank you Oli, Chi, Lyn, Ven, War, Nans, Jackie & Joseph, Steph and partner! =)

Rainy Afternoon Treat

The rain just keeps on pouring!!! My shobe is loving every bit of it because---walang school!!! hahaha. We went to Greenhills to get some programs for the laptop and book browsing for me =)

How fitting it is to have freshly fried pastry dipped in warm chocolate eh on a cold rainy afternoon?---Very and oh sooo good! =)

For me, Dulcinea has the best churros con chocolate ...well maybe in Manila. I have yet to try the ones in Spain! ;P hahahahha So simple and elegant..yet so deliciously refined to the pallate. I love it.

Ofcourse, di mabubusog ang shobe ko with just that...she had the Spaghetti ala Lasagna

..and a pitcher of four seasons fruit shake! hahaha This is nice, it's just good ol' spaghetti topped with bechamel and baked like a lasagna. It is served piping hot with slices of french baguets.

I'll Be Good To Your Heart =)

Yes, I am still on the Sourdough frenzy! hehehe This time, I tried to be good. Since I shall be consuming this on a regular basis and giving it to friends and loved ones...I decided to make them healthier =)

Behold!----The Whole Wheat-Oat Sourdough!!! hahahah I incorporated whole wheat flour and topped my loaves with whole rolled oats...to do a whole-lot-a-good to our body! =)

Thankfully, it didn't alter the texture of the bread. I though they might turn out heavy and dense, since whole grains tend to weigh down doughs. Well the crust is still good and crisp and the crumb...soft and chewy! The whole wheat flour, I think, added a bit of a nuttier-earthy tone to the bread...which---I LIKE =) Love your own! hahahaha

Good thing my sisters didn't notice the difference in taste...they DON'T like anything wheat! ehehe So, I was successful in sneaking in a little fiber in my sister's diet!hahahah =)

Gerry's @ Trinoma

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRY!!!!!
Two great friends of mine celebrate there birthday August 15. One is my best friend from way back gradeschool..Yen....HAPPY BIRTHDAY YEN!!!! =) ...she has been residing in New York since we parted ways in highschool...I miss you Yen! And the my other best friend celebrating his day of birth on this day...my dear Harry!!! Maybe I have an affinity for Leo's hehehe
Anyhoos, we had a dinner celbration at Gerrys at Trinoma. It's my second time here, and there are alot of restos and shops that are now open. Gerry's is located at the second level I think of the circular al fresco area, where most restos are located. The air-conditioned part is a bit small but the al fresco area is quite spacious naman...and has that over looking thing, which I find nice =) Reminded me of Dencio's Ayala heights.
We had a fun evening of catching up and enjoying artery clogging food!
Thank you for dinner Harry and may God continue showering you with love and His blessings!!!! Hugs!!! =)

Belles at Bellissimo

Italian restos have been blossoming left and right these days. Who doesn't love pizzas and pastas right? Well, Gwen and I definitely do! Gwen has been telling me about this new Italian resto at Sct. Castor... Bellissimo Restorante, owned by Caesar Montano. My office is just in the neighborhood, and I was quite surprised that I haven't stumbled upon this place.

Last night, we had dinner at this quaint resto, tucked along side of Clubber's (bar ba ito? o Club??? ;P) at Tomas Morato. Scout Castor is that small street at the side of it. There is also a little bookshop there (I think it's called Bound??--I forgot) and if you come up the street you will find Greens (the vegan resto I was talking about a few posts ago) and the new Zucchini =) (can't wait 'till it opens).

The place had a rustic Italian feel to it. Simple interior..kinda like a cross between Napoli's and a rough Galileo. They offer pizzas, pastas and apps, along with some cheeses, sausages, vinos and excellent gelato (Angelati, sympre!)

Here is the cheese and antipasti display....

A showcase of Italian Gelato (have some Angelati---yun ang best dito!)

Bread sticks, with pesto and marinara dips

The breadsticks were ok ...warm and herbed. The dips were ok too =)

The Genova Pizaa---made of pesto and cheese
Haaay..ok here I go...the pizza looks ok...the edges looked crisp...but sad to say this was a sad pizza. I think the most important part of the pizza is the CRUST! Have a gread crust and even if you have very few or simple toppings---you've got great pizza (that is my opinion) This one was undercooked! The crust was on the soft side..not even chewy...but soft...like pita bread! The pesto and cheese topping was quite alright..it was the crust that ruined the pizza.

A slice of pizza...

This, as the waiter recommended...was THE HOUSE SPECIAL..the Pasta ala Montano....

Its fussili pasta, with tomato sauce and sausages. Oh my! A catastrophe of a pasta dish!!! As you can see, it looks nothing Italian. The taste? hay, super SOGGY pasta! I've never been served over cooked pasta like this! Grabe!!!! One bite, Gwen & I looked at eachother and talagang we were super disappointed!!! It was a sour tasting mush and the sausages were barely there. I'm sooooo sorry. Grabe sa sogginess..mushy na talaga..I swear..no exagg!!!!

Mr. Montano was very, very nice pa naman. He was very warm and friendly. When he saw Gwen and I browsing at the cheese and gelato display, he greeted and chatted with us pa. He even showed us his paintings at the 2nd floor of the resto. I think his medium was oil. The painting were very nice.

Here I am with the very friendly owner of Bellissimo, Caesar Montano.

At the back are his art works..they are lovely pieces, all of which are for sale,by the way =). He tells us that he even plans to sell copies of his epic movies Rizal and Muro Ami on DVD and coffee table books of them.

I noticed, upon coming in the resto..the brick-woodfire oven...that is why I expected great pizza. I couldn't comprehend, how the pizza we had, could come from an oven like this???

This oven loooked like it CAN cook great pizza..whe it if fired up well...but alas..nothing like that.
Maybe we ordered the wrong things? I don't know. Just try for yourself if you will..have Gelato for a sure shot win.....just don't have that pasta!hahahaha :p
Despite of the food....we had a great time! Food tripping is always fun with yays and even occasional nays! hahaha
Thank you Gwen I had a great time with you (as always) =)

Got Stoned!!! ;P

My baby sis Nikki, was looking for some of my sour dough bread yesterday...I am sooo happy she liked my bread. Ofcourse, I was more than delighted to make her more!!! It warms the heart of a baker to have loved ones ask for more...most definietly! I preped up another bacth last night so that whe my sis wakes up...she can enjoy freshly baked Sourdough!!!

It kinda got easier this time around.... I knew my time schedule for making the dough and baking. I was in search for a baking stone. When I was at Power Plant, before the Pink Kitchen event...I went to Cooks Exchange to check ouf if they have baking stones. Well, they didn't have any for sale...but they did have 2 of them there, but they were reserved!!! I begged them to show me the stuff...I wanted to see the material and the thickness and shape. What they had was a 13" roung white stone..about 1/4 or 1/2 inch thick....I t hink its the former. Anyhooos...last Sunday, after our Fort trip, I dragged Sal to Wilcon builders and MC home depot to look for unglazed tiles or terracotta stones. They ddidn't have any...but what I did find...were bricks! ahahahhaaha =) Aren't artisan ovens made up of bricks and stones? Well , I got some and brought them home..worth the try right?

After gingerly and loveing prepping my dough....I made 2 big loaves and 1 small one....for trial baking this morning.

When I got..I lined my oven with the bricks and preheated....dressed up for the gym...placed my small loaf....

....and here they are

I think they are better today! The shape is more like the picture in my book and the color of the crust more golden...well just a bit burnt on one side hehehe...I used my small Kitchen aid oven for this one.

I notice the crumb is more airy. It has bigger, yet still uniform air holes (like honey-comb). The crust is crunchy and the inside is moist, spongy and I think softer =) I think the volume is better today =) Perhaps due to the bricks?
When my baby sis got down for her breakfast...TADA....freshly baked sourdough....it cooled just in time for her breakfast.... I spread a lot of president butter (as she likes 'em) and topped it with some peppered lyoner from Santi's deli =)

try it! hahahha
I love baking bread in the moring!!! =D

So much joy bread making gives to me. My bread love!!!!

Kape Isla: It's Not Just a Cafe..It's a Movement

After malling at Market Market, I was starting to get a little migraine..I felt tired and weak....I need my caffeine fix!!! Yeah, that's what happens to me if I don't get my jolt of java upon rising! So Sal and I went back to Serendra to get some brew. Upon crossing the street, Kape Isla was at sight! I've always thought that I was the "upsacle" rendition of good ol' Figaro, but when we got in....well..hindi pala =)

Kape Isla is a coffee shop estbalished by an organization of coffee growers in the Philippines. Well, I don't know all the details about it, but what I do know is that they each week they have a featured brew brand.

As for this week, it was Kapeng Barako. I see this brand in supermarkets, but I have never tried it.

Here is my Americano....

It had a nice clean flavor..no acidic tone, which I liked...but it wasn't quite aromatic. Bold but not aromatic. It was a good brew and I tasted it black (before I decide if I want cream and sugar in it)---once you go black you don't go back! hahahhaa

On the walls...a collection of various Philippines coffee brands...

Ah...next like a library of coffee =) They have Figaro, Gourmet's Coffee, Cordillera, Montessa, Culinary Exchange, Kapeng Barako etc...

It was nice. Philippine coffee is great! For my espresso at home, I use Figaro. I buy weekly at the branch outside our village, so that I have fresh ground beans. In the office I use The Continental Coffee...good for the drip machine. Other local brands that I like are Cordillera and Benguet Gold, they are always fresh =)

A Day @ The Market

This Sunday, Sal and I decided to go to Serendra...we wanted tohave breakfast there and go to Fully Booked. Alas! Can you believe ALL restos there didn't open 'till noon???? No breakfast!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!! Noooooooooo =(

Not to lose hope, we thought of killing time at Market Market untill lunch time. We walked around and stumbled upon Razon's at the al fresco food court...how good it is to have a cool and refreshing halo-halo on a hot sunny morning? ---Great, we thought! With Serendra all put aside...we had our brunch there...

Tapsilog

This was my choice...although I prefer my egg-sunny-side-up cooked to a crisp on both sides! Scarry when the yolk is all runny! hehehe The tapa was ok..a bit tough though...but still tapsilog is real comfort food.

Sally had the tocilog
And to cap our heavy brunch....Halo-halo =_
So cool and refreshing, despite it having only 3-halos of leche flan, sweetened bananas and macapuno
True pinoy comfort food Sunday brunch that surely got us through our day =)

The Love I Lost....

After the Pink Kitchen event, Elaine and I went to Greenbelt to visti our favorite Max Brenner and finally have our choco banana turon!!! We made sure we saved room for our treat, kaya we didn't have proper dinner...and by that I mean we had Jamaican patties ;P hehehhe

When we got there, without even bothering to look at the menu...we called for our choco-banana love....
...but something was not right...we ate and we go...hmmm kulang ba ng chocolate? Parang..ma-turon lang sha ngayon.... =(

Was is just us or did our choco-banana turon love change???? What sorrow....the love has fadded away...

Shucks, after that that, we both were really kinda disheartened. What will make for our HAPPY TREAT now???

We thought...maybe we were just full from all the food we saw at the event? ...Maybe we expected too much from our choco-banana love ....maybe it lost it's magic touch? haaayyyy....

Oh well, after a while maybe we will try it again...but for now...the love is lost =(

Pretty In Pink

The first time I saw the ad for the Pink Kitchen breast cancer benefit food festival on the Lifestyle channel, I defenitely wanted to go! I called on my gal pals, and asked them if they wanted to go too. It's a little something that we can do to help the breast cancer advocacy group. Breast cancer is something not to be taken lightly, and proper information dissimination, I believe is very important so that women can be precautious about it.

We went early afternoon...

A long list of top chefs and students from Enderun, participated in this whole day eating event. We caught the meryenda session...

There are a wide array of breads...challas, baguets, rolls etc...

they look so lovely and enticing!!!

Robs & I tried Saltine's turn overs....she had the chorizo and I had the spinach

A yummy puff pastry that is an excellent snack =)

We moved along the long stretch of food booths...here is something interesting...this is a cricket dish from Everybody's cafe

I wanted to try it, but I was kinda off to have in the afternoon =)

More pastries...

Goodies from Baba Ibazeta

We tried the banana cream pie...well, I mostly picked on the banans and crust! It was loaded with whipped cream and the girls loved it! As we were enjoying Chef Baba's creamy pie, we noticed that the numerous chefs and chefs to be roaming around. I said to them..."dame ng mga chefs noh? Pero you know d ba not all chefs naman are nag-aral from culinary school...like there was a time when I was watching Heny Sison's show...her guest was a chef from Lolo Dad's...he told her that he never got formal Culinary schooling and that he started out as a dishwashed there!..d ba ang galing?" and Gwen goes..."Well, sabe nga ni Ratatouille...ANYONE CAN COOK! " hahahahah You're so funny honey! :P

There were lots of Filipino native goodies like turons and kakanins.

So many food to try and take home! We saw lot of popular chefs there liek Chef Rob, Sunshine Puey, Reggie Aspiras, Jill Sandique Baba Ibazeta, just to name a few. The turn up was great! I even bumped into Joey(80 breakfasts), Christine (Ramblings of a Gypsy Soul), Mr. Anton (Our Awesome Planet) and family!!! It was chit chatting with you all =) Feels good that our love for food is doing somethng good, right? =)

Here we are...Gwen, moi & Robs

Elaine, me & Gwen

For the love of food, friendship and most of all womens health!

2007 Wedding #3: Trina's Wedding

It's time for wedding number 3!!!! My friend Trina had the wedding ceremony at Iglesia Ni Kristo Central and the reception followed at the Gazebo Royale, in Mindanao Avenue.

It's my frist time to go to Gazebo Royale. It was an al fresco, garden set reception. The venue was charming...reminded me of Fern Wood, sans the swans =) It was lovely! A lot of singing and games! I just loved the part when Trina rendered a love song to her new husband...so sweet!!!!

Most of my blockmates from UP FT were there and it wss great to see them again. Here we are...

Sal, Kat, Gale, Melay & yours truly...how time flies talaga!
It was just like yesterday, when these girls and I were in college. We reminisce about the good ol' days when we used to just worry about exams, lab works and all the stuff we had to do for school... we had great laughs. Now moving on to new chapters in our lives...being career women, wives and mothers... =)
Congratulations dear Trina!!!! Best wishes to your new life ahead =)

My Sourdough Love =)

It's baking time for my babies!!!! I patiently waited for them to rise slowly for 12 hours!!! All day long, all I can think of was my bread. To tell you the truth, I was nervous because of 2 things: 1. I don't have a baking stone....I wasn't able to find any at Santi's and the local hardwares nearby didn't have terracotta tiles (yes--I did visit hardwares for that---dapat ata sa Wilcon Builders ako nag punta) 2. I was only able to buy corn meal yesterday! The baking sheet, lined with parchment paper should be dusted with a mixture of bread flour and cornmeal to prevent the baked bread from sticking. I only dusted it with bread flour---I really didn't want to bake them without the cornmeal!

After goin to the gym...I even cut short my belly dancing class, because I wanted to fire up my oven to start preheating!

When I got home, I pre-heated my oven, sans the stone. I prepped a new baking sheet lined with parchment dusted now with the flour-cornmeal mix....and the dangerous thing that I did was...transfer the shaped and risen dough to the new sheet!!!! My friend Elaine warned me about this, but I am hard headed!!! I transferred them as carefully as I can..I mean I was really careful because I know that the proofed dough is at a delicate state.

Here they are....whew!!!! I

I think I put way too much of my dusting mix...but I know I can always tap it off after baking to remove the excess.

So, I placed my first dough in the oven and crossed my fingers! Here is my first SOUGH DOUGH BREAD!!!! =)

The shape is not perfect and the top a bit burned at one side, so I note to rotate the next loaf I bake.

Here our all three loaves baked!!! =) YEHEY!!!! I love them, despite their imperfect shape! As you can see, I am a novice slasher...is it lame not to have a lame? I used a blade to make several delicate gashes on my loaves before baking.

As you can see... the excess dusting flour needs a bit of tapping hehehe...They smelled wonderful! I left them out on the rack to cool completely...I was soo anxious to slice and see the crumb and more importantly ---taste my bread!!!! I decided to slice them in the morning instead! Patience is a virtue! =)

This morning I sliced 2 of the loaves to check the crumb ......voila!!!!!!!

The bread has a nice crust and soft, springy-spongy crumb =) My bread is moist--thank God!!! As for the taste....I toasted a slice.....yummmmmm I taste that delicate slight sour flavor of a real sour dough!!!! I AM SO PROUD AND SOOOOOOOO HAPPY!!!! =) They may not be perfect but I love them!!!! My family, unfortunately, are no fans of Artisan bread. I was having a slice for breakfast and she was intrugues so I toasted a slice for her and buttered it up. I was surprised she liked them..she asked for another and traded her hotdog and star-rice breakfast for some buttered sour dough bread =) It makes me soooo happy at the sight.
Nothing beats bread making! The thrill and feeling of making my first rustic bread is indescribable. Simple as it maybe--bread lang d ba? but if you know the love and care put into making it...you would know what I mean. It's a waiting game! Growing the yeast....waiting....making the dough...rising..waiting...baking...waiting....cooling the loaf..waiting....before you can savor the final glory that is bread!!! =D The more fulfilling part of this? Sharing it with loved ones =)
Joy of joys!!!! =D An experience like no other type of baking has given me to date. I love it!!!!

Hooraaaaayyyy!!! It's Dough Making Day =D

It's time to make my dough! =D My starter is ready for use...I measured the amount necessary to make a batch of Sour Dough Bread, and fed my starter afterwards. You feed the starter culture by adding flour and water and let it ferment once more. Just incase they DO taste good...I keep them alive!!!! bwhahaahaha ;P

Sour dough bread is special, because it takes a lot time to make it. You ferment for days and days. Hence, this should be made with a lot of patience and a lot of love =) For this reason, I adore artisan breads....and more so the sour dough.

Mixing up my starter with honey and flour to jump start the fermentation for my dough making day.

This is the dough goin to rest....to double in bulk =) .... feed and rest to fatten!!!! Works the same way with humans right (kain+tulog=taba bwhahahaha)!!!hahahahaha

I used a kitchen aid to mix the dough...but I knead with my hands at the final addition of flour so I get the feel of the dough. The amount of flour added depends on the moisture of the dough, which is affected by ambient moisture. Since its rainy...I take it the dough is matakaw sa flour.

Here is the bulked-up dough---so cute isn't it? =) The aroma if excellent! Using a starter does have a big difference. I've made different kinds of breads before but this has a special aroma! I hope it does taste as good as it smells!

I divided the dough into 3 loaves and rubbed some flour on top...

I double wrapped my babies in plastic film and set them in the refrigerator to ferment for 12 hours....this makes for a slow rise to work up the flavor of the bread =)
I am so excited to bake them...and a bit nervous! Shucks, I don't have baking stone! It's best to bake breads..specially artisan breads, on a baking stone to ensure even baking temperature. I will find out tomorrow if I am successful....haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay..I hope they turn out right. The baking will make or break my bread! I can't wait! =)

DAY2: Sour Dough Starter

It's ALIVE!!!! =)
After 2 days of fermenting at room temperature...the starter bubbles...a sign that we have YEAST! YEY!!!!

It has a lovely yeasty aroma and a thick and creamy consistency =)

Spicing Up My Morning

A rainy Tuesday morning, and I found myself tackling the Makati rush hour! Grrrrr... traffic was hell!!!

Anyhoos..after doing what I had to do in the business district of Makati, I managd to to have a late breakfast pit stop at Starbucks in de la Costa...I think its Alpap buliding? --not sure, but I do remember that it is the building of the office of Pablo Antonio Architects =) hehehehehe

So here is my breakfast...Jalapeno Cheese roll and a latte =)

This is my first time to have this. I thought of having having something spicy and hot on a rainy morning. Well, its was ok..but I coudn't taste the cheese!!! It's just like plain bread with some kick to it. The heat was just right for me...just hot enough for me to handle;P hahaha

Banana Kleintorte

Another creation of my friend pâtissier Elaine!

She texted me that she had a dessert cake for my sisters. "Not for you Jen, because it's a mouse cake" she texted me hahaha. She knows me so well. Ofcourse I will taste it for the love of appreciating divine desserts, specially ones made by people close to my heart =) Mousse or no mousse I dive my fork into it! hahaha Well, its exquisite chocolate mousse with a layer of banana cream mousse....mousse on mousse!!---Not for moi...but its tasted good...Choco-Banana combo is excellent without a doubt. A very delicate dessert. My sisters adored them..as expected =)

Thank you my dear talented friend! Mwah!

Starting My Starter: SOUR DOUGH DAY 1

Today is the day! Before leaving home for work...I prepped my sour dough starter! TADA......

Now with a little TLC...I hope they turn out nicely =)

My wish for you, dear starter...is to go multiply and create for me a delicious and delicate flavor for my Sour Dough Bread! ahahahaha

If all goes well, I can make my Sour Dough bread before or by the weekend! Yehey!!!! So excited Am I!!!! =) Cross your finger for me!!!

Chillin' with the Girls =)

I don't hang out much at Glorieta nowadays, mostly I prefer Power Plant or Shangri-la for mall-capades. This Sunday though, I found myself there to hang out with my girls..Gwen and Elainey. I needed to buy a gift for my friend Trina's weddning next week so it was just but fitting to go there. Rustan's Departmentstore is the best place to get wedding gift, for me. Apart from the fact that most if not all bridal registries are at Rustan's, I love the full servive of gift wrapping and delivery service! The selections are great as well.

After shopping for my gift, we went to the UCC park cafe, located above the basement parking facing CPK & GJ's. It's my first time there...I think its a cool place to hang out---well, if it's not bright and sunny or hot! hehehehe It was a breezy afternoon...and we decided to "chill" with some cool treats.

I had the Ogura Smoothie! I've long been intrigued by this red bean delight, but I've never had the chance to have it because I am always drawn to having coffee =) ...well up untill now ! I love beans! Red, white kidney, mung, yellow, cannellini and even soya?!hahaha This smoothies is really good. It's redolent of the Azuki Frap of Starbucks, sans the coffee, which I find too sweet. This was blended just right and I like the little bits of grainy Ogura.

And these are the twin towers of Coffee Jelly Parfait....for Gwen And Elaine

They love this cool concoction..well as for me...I just want 'em Jellies =) See that whipped cream cascading along the mountains of coffee ice cream?----well, that was the major barrier that hindered my spoon to scoop up a taste! heheehe But..but...Elaine was generous enough to give me a big cube of coffee jelly...that I dropped in a glass of water to rinse off the cream hahaha ---yuck ba? It was like an espresso jello-shot! =) nice hahaha

After that, we parted ways with Gwen. Elaine and I went to Sanctuario de San Antonio to hear mass---my favorite church =)

Another wonderful Sunday to finish up the week!

Thanks girls!

Another Bridal Shower

I am set out for my wedding number 3, next week. Another very dear friend of mine---my Food Tech classmate, Trina is walking down the isle! A great wedding year for a lot of my close friends I say.

We threw in a bridal shower for her. A yes, women are really so wholesome....baket pag guys ang daya...when they have stag parties...naku headaches for the fiancee hahahaha (dahil scarry na baka may hanky panky!!!!--bwhahaha) ... our bridal showers (and I have attended my fair share of it) primarily constitue of a night of chit chat, singing, a little drinking (maybe not) and EATING!!! hahaha

The party hostess was indeed a food lover. As I glanced over the food she contibuted...I saw creativity. Unfortunately, my pictures do NOT do any justice to any of the food!!!! My hands were a bit shaky and I had no time to focus on pictorials because I was busy goin "aww...hello...musta kana..mwah ...mwah.." to our friends =)

I just want to mention her excellent lasagna...everybody that night agreed that it was excellent.

She made chicken lollipops, kare-kare, a nice Grilled-chicken and eggplant salad =)

Our pot was 2 big bilaos of pancit malabon---na galing malabon talaga ha, and barbeque from Naty's Nook...our favorite bbq site at Kat's office in PhilAm Village =)

There was spaghetti, putos, ice cream and cup cakes by Go Nuts! Yes, they make cupcakes now. It did not have a appeal to me at all as they were all iced up and it kinda looked stiff to me =)hehehe Sorry for the fans of these babies, that's just a personal opinion, I think the girls like them naman.
Back to our nice hostess, as I complimented her cooking, she tells me how fond she is of good and beautiful food. She told of a recent trip to New York, where she was able to dine at Bolo, the resto of Bobby Flay!!! Wow, I think that is great!
It was a very fun night of catching up, playing games and Videoke singing!!! This was kinda sad for me, as my throat has been very sore the past week. My voice is badly hoarse agai =( . Friends who hasn't seen me for years went..."Jen!!!! What happend to your voice? You used to be a soprano at S1 pa!!!.." ohhh sadness, I tell you. I couldn't join in the singing...may part pa naman when we had to do songs that reminded us of college...=( My voice, my poor voice...now an alto---ewwwe. Will I ever get better?
Anyhoos, despite that, I still had a great time...we all did. You need not do crazy stuff to have a good time--right girls! hahaha
Good luck and best wishes to you dear Trina!!!!!!! I can't wait to see you in the pretty white dress....how time flies....

A Mini Re-Union

It's been quite a while since I've hung out with my gal pals' Dang, Sher and Maimai....we used to see each other often, for movies and dinners along with the boys. Mai invited us all for an afternoon get together ..it was really meant to be a dinner thing but I, unfortunately, have made prior engagements (feeling important ba ako? hehehe);P

It turned out to be a very long lunch.....sooo long that it extended up untill early dinner time! hahaha I am glad it did because I was awfully late!!! Embarrassingly late! I am a very punctual person you see, but I got tied up with work and all but I am glad I still made it. We hanged at UCC in Tomas Morato, a favorite coffee place of mine =) and chatted away to catch up with each other.

Thank you girls for waiting! I can't wait to hang out with you girls again soon para maka-sakop ng juicy! hahaha ;P

Book Browsing

I just adore browsing at bookstores! I love reading cookbooks, though, I have NEVER bought a book for myself!!! Yeah, it's true. This is because my atchi buys so many, that I don't have too and I have great friends who give them to me =) ----lucky, lucky! hahaha My sis has a great cookbook collection, from Food Network star chefs bestsellers...we have all Barefoot Contessa series, Guiada, Nigella, Silver Palate...to Good House Keeping Books(these are great by the way! the recipes they put in are fool proof!), Martha Stewart (my sis is a huge fan of hers), Hershey's, Nestle's...its goes on and on .. =) Well, the down side of this for me is that, she doesn't have much on bread, I mean books on bread solely and I only have one given to me by my dear Lotte =) Nevertheless, most of them have things on bread too, specially this Good House Keeping "bible"-like book...really thick and cover savory dishes to desserts and breads as well. I borrow or research on the net =)
I went to Fully Booked at Serendra, with Elaine. Its their biggest branch ever!!! We were so enthralled by sight as we approached the building!!! I've been there once with Sal but most there were just starting to pun in the books on the other levels. This time...Fully booked IS fully packed! We scoured through the building, from the novels and best sellers and lingered mostly at, wherelse, the cookery! ahahhaha I was looking at my new favorite, Jamie Oliver's cook books. ...I noticed that he was kinda odd looking when he was just starting up....scrawny built with a toothy smile =) hehehe. Well, good cooking, entails good eating and his most recent cover photos are more good looking, as he packed in a bit of weight...he looks healthier and cuter I think. More than that, I love reading his notes and how he directs his recipes. Its as if he is talking to you! I like that. I've never tried any of his recipes though. Other than that, there a lot of great bread books that look so enticing and inspiring.
The simple delight of book browsing can be an all night event! hahaha

Back To Baking...

I been having the gym-in-the-morning routine since my shobe started college and its a nice habit, I say =) Today, I didn't go to the gym...but straight to the kitchen to start baking! Yehey!
I haven't been baking for quite a while now. Last night my friend Marc texted me his order for 2 boxes of my Chocobons and was delighted to bake them once again.

And so my morning work out...working on my dough...TADA....

..how cute the brown dough rises! I miss watching the small brown dough balloon into an airy ball =)

I wanted to start my biga as well, I have all intensions of making rustic bread this week....but unfortunately, I had to goto the office...I finished baking one at home...loaded one of our ovens in the car... along with my cooling rack...rags, tongs, boxes, unbaked but formed chocobons and finished cream cheese frosting and drove to the office.

I baked the other batch at work!

Here they are...
...one homemade and the other is commercially done! hahahaha

A friend...a patron....thank you Marc for your order =)
One of my very favorite hot and cold dessert, that picks me up and always brings a smile on my face....the Choco Banana Fritters of Max Brenner =) I smile with the thought. They are just crisply fried---TURON made fabulous by incorporating dark chocolate in them and served with a scoop of Hagen Daaz Vanilla ice cream---ahhhh Nirvana! When a girl friend of mine is sad and needs some cheering up...I introduce them to Max to nurse their blues away with this fancy TURON!!! I remember a post of the beautiful Joey of 80 breakfasts...she made chocnut turon! I told her about my favorite Max treat and how her creation reminded me of it. The turon-ablities, I think are infinite! The turon..is like a humble fried crepe--don't you think? I love crepes =)

Enough of that though, we didn't have any room for such a hearty dessert! (TIP: eat light if you want to enjoy a the Banana Fritters afterwards ;P) We were full from dinner and that sad Jack-Sans added to our sataiation pa!

We had something a bit lighter than my dear favorite treat...it's my first time to have it as well...

Churros ala Max

They usually serve it from 3pm-5pm...sort of a merienda treat, but we requested out dear shaven server (fyi: the waiters there are all---skin head, kase Max is a bald guy so para di sha ma-insecure!hahahah ;P)

We are persuasive women--they obliged to our sweet request and we were greatful =). They were not what I expected though. These are not the traditional churros con chocolate that you may find at Dulcinea ( I think they have the best ones =) ) Their renditon of this Spanish delight: skinny logs of fried dough pastry, dusted with cocoa powder and confectioners sucre. A chocolate sauce in a mini Erlenmeyer flask , a tiny fruit cup and sugared Walnuts were served on the side to complete the plate! Well, I had it with coffee and Elaine had the Italian Thick chocolate, which was great because we could dunk our churros there! hahahah ;P

We enjoyed our dessert and more so enjoyed our time togther...maximizing our bonding time at Max B's, for Elaine you see is soon leaving the me =(.

Something Different at M Cafe

With much pleasure from our Fig and Olive dinner, we decided to move to Greenbelt for dessert! To stall for time as well as we were very much full. Apparently, the movie was out of our agenda as we missed the showing time we wanted. Elaine told me she heard good things about the dessert offering of M Cafe. M Cafe is located at the Ayala Museum. A posh looking restaurant cum bar cum hooka place! hehehe I've dined there before, but I don't recall being so impressed with the food. I think I had seabass, but no dessert.

When we got there we checked out the menu and we were a bit surprised that they only offer a few cake varieties and pots de creme. I am no fan of the pots! hahaha So we just asked our good ol' server to recommend the best seler...he indubitably replied.."the Jackfruit Sansrival and the Choc-nut Valrhona cake"

I was more intrgued by the Choc-nut cake but Elaine wanted the Jack fruit Sansrival...

and here is Jack....which turned out to be a real FRUIT!bahwhahaah

It was sad looking...just look at it..looking back at you, sitting on that gargantuan rectangular dish! The only thing I liked on this plate---the Cashews =) hehehhe

It was nothing like a sansrival. No wafer, no dacquoise. There was just a layer of yema like substance that did taste like Jackfruit and a layer of mushy minced nuts with something sweet and brown! hahahaha I am sorry to M Cafe...maybe there are a lot of people who really adores this, but maybe when it comes to Sansrival, we are purists...by that I mean we want it to have the nutty wafer later and expect ist oh sooo buttery and nutty. We at once thought of our Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Pistachio nut Sansrival---that was good ei! =)

Well, that was that, maybe we just didn't like their rendition of this dessert. Nevertheless, the interiors of M Cafe is definitely admirable, I like the art that adorned the walls =)

Fig & Olive

What a lovely place! Fig & Olive, is a Spanish-Mediterranean restaurant found along H.V. dela Costa in Makati. Yes, Makati. Elaine & I were supposed to catch the new movie of Mandy Moore, License to Wed, and since the movie was at 845pm, we decided to have something interesting for dinner =) We traversed the business district of Makati to look for this restaurant nouveau to us. Fortunately, despite both of us being always a-lost in the area...we found it with ease. Meant to be ah! hahahah

It has that feel of quaint elegance that appealed to us. The place is personal and cozy...we loved it!

The menu had a good mix of Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine. From pastas to fabadas to humus and kebabs! They offer vinos, cocktails and desserts to boot.

We chose to share the Chicken Galantine.
It's somewhat like a meatloaf of minced chicken meat mixed with nuts(like pistachios), dried fruits, ham and herbs. This was served blanketed by mushroom gravy with veggies and garlic bread on the side. A great melange of flavors! Really good galantine. I like the sweetness imparted by the dried fruit, ( in this case I think they were sultanas?) whichs cuts through the richness of the dish.
We lingered quite a while, taking phots, enjoying the food. A place worth going back to and very conducive to vital colloquy! =)

Starbucks Coffee Press

Our final stop...wherelse...Starbucks! We were all so full, so Elaine and my sis had brownies and a toffee bar, respectively. I had the pressed coffee.
Black coffee soothes the full stomach...but deleterious to one with acid reflux =S

Santi's Treats

When we moved to Corinthian Hills, we went first to Rustan's ro buy some yoghurt, milk and cereals. My shobe needed a change of breakfast treats! She has been having spam and hotdogs for breakfast and I think its time she had a healthier change. Oh, the yoghurts are for me. I've been on a banana-yoghurt addiction since Elaine made me some a couple of nights ago at her house.

Santi's was still open as well so we went in to check out their stuff. I really enjoy buying stuff their and even just browsing through their items =)

This was something new... it was the first time I saw this on the shelf...

...a mix of chopped nuts and herbs...meant as bread dip or salad sprinklies. As bread dip...just add to some Olive Oil....interesting, interesting.

Lookie here...this is the lady fingers great for Tiramisu...Savoiardi!
I miss Caruso's Tiramisu =)

Nuts about nuts....

Cashew, Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Pecans, Almonds, Pinenuts....Love them all!!!

Cheeses! Quezos! Formaggi!!!!

I love cheese!!!!! =)

Our Special Place

Back when my baby sis Nikki was still..well a baby( kid naman, hehehe)..I used to her official driver to and from school. I really like making her happy by bring her to McDo with MacPlay Place or at Shakey's, where they have those little tike homes to play in while having milkshakes and pizza =) I'm glad she doesn't read my blog..otherwise she will go--ewwwee with this kwento of mush! She used to be such an adorable and bubbly child...but my baby is now a lady....how time flies talaga.

Nevertheless, we still have our shobe-ditsie day outs! hehehe Sometimes I bring her with me when I go out with my friends. Ganun na ba talaga...ka-gimick ko na ang baby sis ko! hahaha When I first had a chance to dine at The Cook Book Kitchen, I instantly thought of my shobe Nikki and Che. I know their food preferences and I was sure they would both like the food there. They love rich tasting and buttery food! The creamier the better! =)

I told shobe....may "special place" ako dadalan sa inyo soon =) .

That time came last Wednesday night. Shobe texted me..."ditsie, let's watch ratatouille". I really had movie plans with Elaine, but I told shobe that I'd gladly watch it again. I told her Elaine will come with us and she goes..."yey! kasama si Elaine" over txt! I told Elaine the plan and she was happy to oblige. I told shobe..we have dinner first at "the special place" hehehehe and she got excited.

The three of us were very much hungry goin to CBK! There was a wine tasting function that evening, but they were able to accommodate 3 famished girls pa naman =)

Moi, shobe and Elaine

We had the squash soup....
good and squashy =) hehehehe Served with a small pillow o bread.

a pair of baked fish

Sizzling hot when it was served to us! Good and buttery and shobe liked it =) This was very satiating, really. After having this we felt full to the brim!
We had so much fun! Elaine and Shobe have something in common, they are both La Sallites so they like talking about school...the noon at ngayon kinda thing. Among my friends, Elaine is my shobes favorite hang mate =) Well, my shobe declared that she didn't want to watch a movie and would rather hang out at Starbucks for more chit chat. Well we could always watch again another day =)
We proceeded to Corinthian Hills to cap the evening.
CBK is such a warm and friendly place. Delicious and simple comfort food with a homey ambiance. Next time I'll take Che and her fiancee Jeff there (as I promised them) =)
